About the Collection
Hard Candy is the pseudonym Emma used to release a series of mixed media pieces between 2019 and 2020. Emma was inspired by the fictitious imagery of women portrayed in everything from major films to ads for household items. This imagery uses the psychology of the male gaze to turn a profit, but is a false representation of women, both individually and as a whole.
The Hard Candy series uses vibrant neon colors and a playful stylized approach to grab the viewer’s attention, but it is the slightly disturbing imagery that makes it hard to look away. Each piece presents a female figure, some composed to be unsettling, while others create food for thought. Either way, the message is female empowerment.
